Winter Energy Payment
The Winter Energy Payment is an extra payment to help with the cost of heating your home over the winter months. You must be getting a main benefit, pension or Jobseeker Support Student Hardship.
You don't need to apply for the Winter Energy Payment. If you meet the criteria, it's paid automatically from 1 May to 1 October every year.
Winter Energy Payment ended on 1 October 2024.
When you'll get your last 2024 payment
If you're paid weekly
- You'll get your last full Winter Energy Payment in the week starting 30 September.
- You'll get a part Winter Energy Payment (2 days worth) in the week starting 7 October.
- Your first payment without Winter Energy Payment will be in the week starting 14 October 2024.
If you're getting NZ Super or Veteran's Pension
- Your fortnightly payment on Tuesday 8 October will have 7 days of Winter Energy Payment included.
- Your first payment without Winter Energy Payment will be on Tuesday 22 October 2024.
Power redirections
If you have a redirection of your benefit set up to pay for power costs, you may want to review your redirection if your usage changes as winter eases. Contact us if you need to change this.
