What we check before approving a COVID-19 Wage Subsidy August 2021 application

When you apply for a COVID-19 Wage Subsidy August 2021 payment we validate your business information with Inland Revenue before payment is made.

We may also contact you if:

  • you are a large employer
  • the information you have provided does not match the information IR holds about you or your business
  • you do not appear to meet the eligibility criteria
  • you have made multiple applications
  • an employee in your application has already been applied for
  • you repaid, or were asked to repay, a previous wage subsidy
  • you were declined a previous wage subsidy.

What we check when we contact you

If we have questions about your application (before or after payment) we may contact you to:

  • discuss any discrepancies in the information you provided
  • discuss any complaints about your receipt of the subsidy
  • understand the nature of your business and your eligibility
  • reconcile business and / or employee information provided
  • confirm the subsidy was used to pay your employees
  • confirm you are meeting your obligations
  • request additional information to support your application.

We may also contact other agencies to verify your business or the information provided.

Enforcement action

You may be subject to civil proceedings for the recovery of any amount you receive that you are not entitled to, and/or to prosecution for offences under the Crimes Act 1961, if you:

  • provide false or misleading information; or
  • fail to meet any of the obligations about how you must use the subsidy; or
  • receive any subsidy or part of a subsidy that you were not entitled to receive, including where any predicted decline in revenue of the relevant period is not realised.
