Transition to Alternative Housing grant

If you live in public (social) housing and choose to move into private housing, we may be able to give you a one-off payment called ‘Transition to Alternative Housing Grant’.

  • Who can get it

You may be able to get this payment if you:

    • live in public housing
    • have signed a tenancy agreement for a private rental
    • have a better chance of affording and managing long term in a private house with this help
    • choose to leave public housing, even though you meet the criteria to stay there
    • either:
      • are a New Zealand citizen, or
      • have been a permanent resident and living in NZ for at least 2 years.

We’ll also take into account other factors, such as:

    • your situation
    • if this is the best help for you
    • what other help is available to you
    • if this payment would help you move into private housing.

If you're not sure whether you qualify, call us and we'll talk with you about your situation.

  • What you can get

You can get $3,000 if you’re the only person who's signed the tenancy agreement applying for this payment.

If there’s someone else who's signed the agreement and applying for this, the payment will be split between you.

You don't need to pay the money back.
