Automated decision-making
Find out about automated decision-making (ADM) and our ADM Standard.
In some of our processes we use automated tools to make decisions. This is called automated decision-making (ADM). When tasks are repetitive or manual and don’t need discretion from our staff, we can process things faster and more consistently. For example, we use ADM to re-grant payments, like Jobseeker Support, when all criteria are met.
Automated decision-making does not replace our staff making decisions and having conversations with you when that is needed.
We’ll let you know if we use automated decision-making when we provide a service to you.
Automated decision-making is not generative AI. Generative AI is the type of technology used in tools like ChatGPT.
Making sure we are responsible
To make sure we are responsible and fair when we use automated decision-making, we use an ADM Standard.
We also use our Privacy, Human Rights and Ethics Framework to make sure that we’re looking at risks of the process to safeguard the New Zealanders we support. Any possible bias or discrimination, and other risks are assessed.
The Group General Manager, Service Improvement and Delivery makes sure that we deal with any issues about automated decision-making if they come up.
There's more information about this on the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) website.
