What we can do for 16-19 year olds
We offer a number of services for young people to help improve skills through education, training, work or other related activities.
What we offer:
Youth Service supports young people to stay in or get into education, training or work-based learning while offering guidance and support towards an independent life.
A payment to help with your living costs while you study full-time. You don't have to pay this back.
A loan from the Government to help finance your study.
An allowance which helps people on some benefits with some employment-related training costs.
A six-week motivational course run by the New Zealand Defence Force.

- under 18 and not in full-time education contact a Youth Service provider to discuss your options
- over 18 contact us we can offer career guidance and help you find a job that's right for you.
We may be able to help you with some of the costs of looking for work and attending interviews.
If you're struggling to find a job talk to us about your options. We may be able to help you get work experience or training.
We can help you find work and support you while you're looking for work. If you're finding it hard to get a job then talk to us. We may be able to help you get work experience or to learn new skills to help you get a job.

We understand that for some people starting a new job isn't always easy. We want to support you while you settle into work and may be able to help you with some initial job costs.
Youth Payment
Youth Payment is a weekly payment which helps young people aged 16 or 17 who can't live with their parents or guardian and aren't supported by them or anyone else.
If you apply for this, we'll also talk to your parent or caregiver about your situation.

Young Parent Payment is a weekly payment which helps young parents aged 16-19 year olds.
If you apply for this, we'll also talk to your parent or caregiver about your situation.
Away from Home Allowance
If you're caring for a 16 or 17 year-old who's living away from home while on a tertiary or training course, you may be able to get an allowance to help with their living costs.
We may be able to provide financial help if you're looking after a child.
If you are under 19 and have a child under five, and are in education, training or work-based learning, you may be able to get the Guaranteed Childcare Assistance Payment (GCAP) to assist with the cost of childcare
